Affective engagement to emotional facial expressions of embodied social agents in a decision-making game

چکیده
Previous research illustrates that people can be influenced by the emotional displays of computer-generated agents. What is less clear is if these influences arise from cognitive or affective process (i.e., do people use agent displays as information or do they provoke user emotions). To unpack these processes, we examine the decisions and physiological reactions of participants (heart rate and electrodermal activity) when engaged in a decision task (prisoner’s dilemma game) with emotionally expressive agents. Our results replicate findings that people’s decisions are influenced by such emotional displays, but these influences differ depending on the extent to which these displays provoke an affective response. Specifically, we show that an individual difference known as electrodermal lability predicts the extent to whether people will engage affectively or strategically with such agents, thereby better predicting their decisions. We discuss implications for designing agent facial expressions to enhance social interaction between humans and agents. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Affective Embodied Conversational Agents for Natural Interaction
Human computer intelligent interaction is an emerging field aimed at providing natural ways for humans to use computers as aids. It is argued that for a computer to be able to interact with humans it needs to have the communication skills of humans. One of these skills is the affective aspect of communication, which is recognized to be a crucial part of human intelligence and has been argued to...
متن کاملRepresenting Affective Facial Expressions for Robots and Embodied Conversational Agents by Facial Landmarks
Affective robots and embodied conversational agents require convincing facial expressions to make them socially acceptable. To be able to virtually generate facial expressions, we need to investigate the relationship between technology and human perception of affective and social signals. Facial landmarks, the locations of the crucial parts of a face, are important for perception of the affecti...
متن کاملMaxine: Embodied Conversational Agents for Multimodal Emotional Communication
Emotions are fundamental to human experience, influencing cognition, perception and everyday tasks such as learning, communication and even rational decision-making. Humancomputer interaction (HCI) systems capable of sensing user affective state and giving adequate affective feedback are, therefore, likely to be perceived as more natural, persuasive and trustworthy (Cassell & Bickmore, 2000). A...
متن کاملEmotional agents for collaborative e-learning
Revised: September 30th, 2007 ABSTRACT. In this paper, we discuss the social intelligence that renders affective behaviours of intelligent agents, and its application to a collaborative learning system. We argue that socially appropriate affective behaviours would provide a new dimension for collaborative learning systems. The description of a system to recognize the six universal facial expres...
متن کاملPhysiological evidence for a dual process model of the social effects of emotion in computers
There has been recent interest on the impact of emotional expressions of computers on people’s decision making. However, despite a growing body of empirical work, the mechanism underlying such effects is still not clearly understood. To address this issue the paper explores two kinds of processes studied by emotion theorists in human–human interaction: inferential processes, whereby people retr...
